最近、日本の研究はどう進んでいるかについてアメリカにいらっしゃるアドバイザーと話し合うと、叱られました！なぜかというと、私はいつもBOOKOFFのような古本屋で仏教本を探してばかりだからです。現代のマインドフルネス・仏教本の状態をしっかり理解するため、普通の本屋によく通う必要がありますって。それで、最高の宿題をくださった：二週間に一回、ジュンク堂に行って、新しい本を見つけるということです。
I recently met with my advisor to discuss how my research is going in Japan, and he gave me an earful for spending all of my time looking at Buddhist books in used book stores. In order to understand the current state of Buddhist and mindfulness books in Japan, he told me, you have to frequent a normal book store and see what's coming in and on display there. Then he gave me the best homework: go to Junkudo every two weeks to browse the shelves and see what's new.
唯一の休日だったのに、朝、イアン・リーダのアウム真理教に対する本を読んでから、その日の残り時間のすべてにおいて、ジュンク堂の池袋本店の4階を隅々まで探索して、写真をやたらと撮ってしまいました。気がついたらせっかくの休日が終わってしまいました！とにかく、気楽に行くはずでしたので、ぶらぶらと歩いて、様々な本と出合うようにしていました。
I went to Junkudo in Ikebukuro on what was supposed to be my day off, although I wound up spending the morning reading Ian Reader's book on Aum Shinrikyo, Religious Violence in Contemporary Japan, and spent the rest of the day meticulously documenting the books and displays I found on the fourth floor. So much for a relaxed day! Still, since I was technically supposed to be taking it easy, I tried my best to just walk around and see what I could find.
